The unusual hobby of the Tretyakov merchants - to collect objects of Russian art that were not interesting to anyone at that time - at first was of no interest to anyone. However, by 1983 the situation had changed, and collecting samples of Russian painting and other works of art had become a matter of national importance. From now on, the Tretyakov Gallery is considered the main national treasury of the country's painting.
